Airports and Transportation to the University of Maine

Bangor and Portland both have small airports with connecting flights. Bangor is only a 10 minute ride to the UMaine campus, while Portland is a 2-hour drive or bus ride. Boston Logan Airport is a 4.5-5 hour ride by car or bus. Note that there is no connecting flight from the Boston Logan Airport to the Bangor Airport. Major airports that have connecting flights into the Bangor airport include:

  1. Orlando Airport, Florida
  2. LaGuardia Airport, NY City
  3. JFK Airport, NY City
  4. Newark Airport, NJ
  5. Philadelphia Airport, PA
  6. Reagan Airport in Washington, D.C

Bangor International Airport (BGR)

  • Closest to the University of Maine 
  • Limited flights available. 
  • Local taxis, Uber or Lyft available to Orono. About a 20-30 minute drive
  • Rental cars available

Portland International Jetport (PWM)

  • 2 hour ride to campus. 
  • More flights available than Bangor. 
  • Taxi, Uber or Lyft to the Concord Trailways 
  • Concord Trailways Coach Bus station nearby in South Portland to travel up to Bangor
  • Rental cars also available

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)

  • 4.5-5 hour ride to campus. 
  • Major airport for domestic or international flights
  • The Concord Coach Lines bus company has comfortable buses with air conditioning, wifi, and movies. It picks up curb-side at each terminal at the Boston Logan Airport several times per day under the sign for “Scheduled Buses” just outside the baggage claim area at each terminal. The bus from Boston Logan Airport to Bangor makes one brief stop in Portland. From Bangor you can call a taxi, Uber or Lyft to travel to campus.
  • If you plan to take this bus to and from the Boston Logan Airport to Bangor, it is important to carefully consult the bus schedule for this bus, to ensure your flight will not arrive after the last bus to Bangor! Generally, the last bus departing the Boston Logan Airport for Bangor leaves the airport at 4:35 pm and arrives at the Bangor bus station at 9:25 pm. Buses leave the Concord Coach bus station in Bangor at 7 am, 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm, and 3:30 pm and arrive at the Boston Logan airport about 4.5 hours later. Check the bus schedule again in June for any updates in their summer schedule.
  • Buses Tickets may be purchased in advance online or at the Portland bus station during the stop there. A round-trip ticket is about US $96. 

Uber and Lyft also operate in the Bangor area.

We will provide round-trip van rides from the URSA hotel on campus to downtown Orono on Monday and Tuesday evening for participants to find dinner at local restaurants, as well as rides to the Versant Astronomy Center for the evening show.
