The Leadership for Professional Learning Symposium originated from the International Teacher Leadership Conference in Miami, Florida, in 2017, which aimed to empower educators to influence change within their own contexts.
In 2019, the event travelled to Cambridge, UK, to join forces with the Leadership for Learning network, and the gathering was reborn as the Leadership for Professional Learning Symposium (LfPL). This event brought together educators from across the globe to engage in conversations, share success, address challenges and raise questions from their local contexts.
In 2021, the first virtual LfPL took place, this time focused on leadership within technology-enhanced professional learning spaces. Then, the symposium traveled to Dublin City University in 2022, and gathered around the theme Leadership for Professional Learning in Complex Times: Asking New Questions. The most recent symposium was held at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso at the Center for Advanced Studies and Extension – PUCV in Santiago, Chile, in 2024, and the theme was Educators and Professionalism in Turbulent Times.
The symposium is designed to bring together practitioners, researchers, and administrators and provide a forum in which a rich variety of perspectives can be shared. The event fosters connections between cultural, professional, and academic backgrounds and has resulted in a series of publications and special issues. Each symposium from Cambridge onward has resulted in the publication of a special issue that included articles on the themes that emerged from the symposium, often co-authored by participants of the symposium.
